As LOPE-C 2011, Large-area, Organic and Printed Electronics Convention prepares to open for business at the Messe Frankfurt, Germany, on June 28-30, 2011, more than 1,000 attendees and 90 exhibitors are expected to visit to learn about and discuss the latest developments in printed electronics.

Sponsored by the OE-A (Organic Electronic Association), LOPE-C has plenty for everyone in the field, as the talks that are scheduled illustrate.

Day 1

The Wednesday, June 29 plenary session begins with a series of keynote talks followed by five concurrent sessions. Wolfgang Mildner, managing director of PolyIC GmbH & Co.KG and chairman of the OE-A, will begin the opening session with his talk on “Organic and Printed Electronics – Ready to Go.”

Dr. Young-Sup Joo, Office of Strategic R&D Planning, managing director/core industry sector, South Korea, follows with “Global Collaboration Initiatives for the Successful Commercialization of the Printed Electronics.”

“Ignition Sequence Starts. OLED Lighting Ready for Take Off?” is the topic of the talk by Dr. Karsten Heuser, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH, director and general manager OLED. Prof. Takao Someya, University of Tokyo, then will discuss “Ambient Electronics Using Printed Organic Transistors.”

From there, LOPE-C offers five concurrent sessions. Track 1, BC-Investor Forum, is chaired by Dr. David Fyfe, senior advisor, Sumitomo PLED Business, Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd., who will lead an international panel on the topic of “Financing Opportunities in Organic and Printed Electronics.”

After the lunch break, there will be presentations given by leaders of Quantumatica, Delftronics, InovisCoat GmbH, NTERA, Metalonix, Inc., Eight19 Ltd., Ynvisible, ISORG, VTT, Solar Press, Thin Film Electronics ASA, Molecular Vision Ltd., and Future House, Ltd.

Track 2 covers the area of displays, lighting and organic photovoltaics. Session chair Dr. Peter Fischer, director engineering, Plastic Logic GmbH, will lead the late morning session, which features speakers from E Ink and Holst Centre/TNO.

Dr Thomas Dobbertin, director material & technology, Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH, will lead the early afternoon session of ions by leaders from University of Durham, Konicaminolta Holdings, and Moser Baer India Ltd. Track 2 then heads into the field of OPV as session chair Dr. George Z. Wu, vice president of manufacturing systems, Solarmer Energy Inc., hosts talks from executives of Konarka Technologies GmbH, Plextronics and the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST).

Track 3 covers the area of Materials. Dr Mark Stoll, global CTO I and global product group manager – Pearl, Eckart GmbH, serves as session chair for talks from executives of Unidym and Merck Chemical.

After the break, Dr Stephan Kirchmeyer, director of production & technology, Heraeus Clevios GmbH, chairs the early afternoon session of Track 3, with talks from leaders of Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM), Sunchon National University, and Konkuk University. The topic of Process follows next, as Dr Mark James, Merck Chemicals Ltd., serves as the session chair as presenters from FUJIFILM Dimatix, Kroenert, Max, Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co KG, and Océ-Technologies B.V., discuss their latest advances.

Track 4 begins with Printing Technologies, with Dr. Jan Sumerel, Rambus, Inc., serving as session chair. Talks are scheduled by leaders of Holst Centre, Konkuk University, Fusion UV Systems GmbH, AIXTRON SE and CNRS – Mediterranean University.

After lunch, session chair Dr. Walter Fix of PolyIC GmbH & Co. KG will lead talks on organic transistors by researchers from Columbia University SEAS, Georgia Institute of Technology, Joanneum Research Forschungs GesmbH, UC Berkeley and Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Novel Systems and Applications, the next topic of Track 4, will be led by session chair Prof. Takao Someya, professor, University of Tokyo. Talks will be given by representatives of CEA, University of Applied Sciences – Munich, Allami Nyomda Plc., and the Centre Technique du Papier.

Track 5 features talks on Sensors and Systems, with Dr. Barbara Stadlober, Joanneum Research GmbH, serving as session chair.
Talks will be given by researchers from University of California, Berkeley, Acreo, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, Fraunhofer IFAM, UC Berkeley and Stuttgart Media University.

After lunch, Track 5 continues on the topic of Laser Processing, led by session chair Dr. Bertrand Fillon, CEA/Commissariat à l’énergie atomique. Talks are scheduled by leaders of 3D-Micromac AG, The Printable Electronics Technology Centre, Fraunhofer ILT and Oxford Lasers Ltd.

Prof. Shlomo Magdassi, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, next serves as session chair for talks based on Organic and Carbon-Based Materials, as representatives from Universität zu Köln, Nano-C, Inc., NECTEC (ICA Lab.), and National Physical Laboratory present their findings.

Day 2

LOPE-C begins its second day of plenary sessions with a series of keynote talks, leading off with Robert Isele, BMW Group, manager perceived value, FEP Integration, who will discuss “Flexible Electronics as a Key for a New Experience of Value in Automotive Design.”

Dr. Bon Won Koo, Samsung Electronics Advanced Institute of Technology, general manager on printable electronics, will cover
“Printable and Flexible Electronics for the Future Applications.”
Thomas Andrae, director, 3M New Ventures, follows Dr. Koo’s talk with “Printable and Flexible Electronics and Capacitive Multi Touch.

Once again, the conference breaks into five concurrent tracks.
Track 1’s morning session, Electronics/Components I, chaired by Dr. Herman Schoo, manager sensor systems and tags, Holst Centre, covers talks by officials from Novaled AG and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology.

After lunch, Dr. Schoo returns as session chair, with talks from PolyIC GmbH & Co. KG, Osaka University Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research and PARC Palo Alto Research Center.

Prof. Arto Maaninen, chief research scientist, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, then serve as session chair from Track 1 as it covers Integrated Smart Systems II. Talks are scheduled by officials from KSG Leiterplatten GmbH and Centro Ricerche Fiat S.C.p.A.

Track 2 follows up on Day 1’s discussion of Displays, as Dr. Fischer chairs the morning session, featuring talks from leaders of Polymer Vision B.V., Samsung LCD Netherlands and adt GmbH.

Dr, Wit will serve as the late morning session chair for Track 2, with talks scheduled by officials from Polyera Corporation, Solarmer Energy and Solar Press. Dr. Dobbertin reruns to chair the end of Track 2, covering Lighting, as speakers from DuPont Displays and Astron FIAMM Safety/Blackbody are on hand to discuss their work.

Track 3 begins with Integrated Smart Systems I. Session chai r Prof. Arto Maaninen, chief research scientist, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, hosts talks from representatives of Stora Enso Oy Packaging Solutions, Acreo AB and plastic electronic GmbH.

After lunch, Dr. Stoll leads the Materials II session, with talks by representatives of Heraeus Clevios GmbH, 3M Optical Systems Division and Eckart GmbH slated. Dr. James then leads a session on Process, with presentations planned by executives from Coatema Coating Machinery GmbH and Plastic Logic GmbH.

Track 4 and Track 5 host the scientific conference. Track 4 begins by covering Inorganic Materials. Session chair Prof. Dr. Reinhard R. Baumann, Fraunhofer ENAS leads the morning session, with speakers contributing from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS, Politecnico di Torino, INM – Leibniz-Institut für Neue Materialien GmbH and Ege University.

Systems and Implementation Issues is the next focus of Track 4, with session chair Prof. Ioannis Kymissis, Columbia University SEAS hosting talks by officials from ST Ericsson, TU Darmstadt, Tampere University of Technology and Fraunhofer ISIT.

Prof. Donald Lupo, Tampere University of Technology, closes Track 4 as session chair for Novel Inks and Processes, featuring speakers from FhG-IAP, Swansea University, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research and Fraunhofer IFAM.

Track 5’s late morning session focuses on OLEDs and OPV, as session chair Prof. Klaus Meerholz, Universität zu Köln, leads talks by representatives from Novaled AG, Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems, Plextronics Inc., ECN and Fluxim AG.

After lunch, Track 5 returns with the topic of Sintering of Inorganic Materials, as session chair Prof. Dr. Vivek Subramanian, University of California, Berkeley, leads talks by executives at NovaCentrix, Tampere University of Technology, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, and PChem Associates Inc.

Novel Process Concepts, led by session chair Prof. Kee-Hyun Shin of Konkuk University, concludes Track 5, and features representatives from Fontys University of Applied Sciences, nTact/FAS, Fraunhofer Institute of Photonic Microsystems and Bosch Rexroth.
